Neurofeedback therapy is gaining popularity each and every day, and not just here in our hometown of Cary, NC. Its popularity is growing worldwide. The results speak for themselves – so many people are able to live fuller lives with the help of neurofeedback. However, the process is still full of uncertainty for those new to neurofeedback.
First things first – what goes on in an initial brain scan?
Here are some things you should know about starting neurofeedback therapy:
- Consultation. The first step is to either meet with us or have a phone consultation. No good medical treatment should begin without a thorough discussion of what the patient is feeling, their thoughts on treatment, what you have
tried in the past, and general conversation of the therapy. We are happy to take the time to make our patients informed and comfortable while getting to know them. - Basic Scan. Next, patients undergo a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG). This is a basic scan of the brain to see how it works. Although the scan is very comprehensive, it’s a simple process for the patient that yields a lot of information without radiation.
Analyzing. After the qEEG, the patient’s data is analyzed using a normative database and a brain map is generated. This helps doctors see what your brain is doing allowing us to design a treatment specific to your physiology and needs. - Treatment. Once the brain map has been reviewed by the doctor and patient, a plan for treatment can be finalized and therapy can begin.
The field of neurofeedback is an exciting one that’s developing every day. The most unique thing about it is that although it has excellent science to support the treatment, it’s also unique to each individual. Since there is no one-size-fits-all approach, the initial steps are even more important. Contact us to see how neurofeedback can help you.
